When trying to install ESXi to an unsupported storage device such as IDE you may get the following error:
"Unable to find a supported device to write the VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 image to"

With the error on the screen press ALT+F1. This will let you into the ESXi installer console

One of the first things you will configure in vCenter Server is

  • Create a datacenter
  • Create a HA and DRS cluster
  • Add an ESX/ESXi host

VMware vSphere 4 has a number of great improvements and additional features.

Upgrading vCenter is the first step in getting your virtual infrastructure ready to be able to take advantage of these.

vCenter must be upgraded first, before adding any ESX/ESXi 4 hosts. ESX 3.5 hosts can be added to vCenter 4. However ESX 4 hosts cannot be added to vCenter 2.5.

 

1. Login to the VMware license portal to check/upgrade/buy your vSphere licenses.

When installing Windows XP as a guest OS on a VMware ESX Server you may get the following error:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer"

To use a SCSI disk in a Windows XP VM you need a special SCSI driver.
